FR. JACK, CAPUCHIN MISSIONARY, ENTERS ETERNITY
Capuchin Franciscan Father John "Jack" Niland, who left a 23-year assignment in Guam in 1999 to be pastor at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Pearl City, died at the age of 59 on Aug. 5 at St. Clare’s Friary in Yonkers, N.Y. He was a Capuchin for 42 years and a priest for 33 years.
Father Niland was born on Oct. 25, 1949, to John and Catherine (Flynn) in the Bronx, N.Y. He joined the Capuchin Franciscans in 1967 and was ordained a priest by Cardinal Terrence Cooke on May 8, 1976, at Sacred Heart Church in Yonkers.
Most of his priesthood was spent on Guam in the Capuchins’ vice province of Our Lady Star of the Sea. His first assignment was Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Agat where he was associate pastor from 1976 to 1978 and then pastor until 1985.
Father Niland’s community elected him vice provincial in 1985, and again in 1988.
The friar was also pastor of San Juan Bautista Parish in Ordot and a chaplain at the Naval Hospital on Guam. He had been the pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Santa Rita from 1991 to 1999, when he was assigned to Hawaii to head Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Pearl City.
